An alternative to Cup mode for competitions! Let's Talk!

Post by Flirno »

Hello,
Flirno here :3

I recently thought of something that could change our vision about cup mode and all related big events/competitions :thx:

I have no experience in competitions as a pro player since I play the game as a middle-tier player (Trackmania 2 Stadium, TMNF).
Therefore I will mostly talk from a viewer perpective :)

Indeed, me like many others, really like to watch competitions especially when it is well cast (Radiance, Riolu, Zerator, R2K, Spam, Wingobear, CiremyxX, etc...) (yes frenchy here ;) )

Let's start with a simple question

Have you ever felt (at any given point of time) unhyped during a cast?
(Keep reading if yes, if no tell me why after reading )

Nowadays, competitions are usually hosted using cup mode (TMGL was one of the exceptions). With a point limit range going from 100 to 121 even sometimes 140  .

Given that, matchs can be quite long , every player have to stay focused during the whole match if they want to get the (so much wanted) status of finalist

To my mind, this is a good mode because it shows how consistent are the players and exhibits pure skill :3

However, (from a viewer's perspective) most of the hype appears when one (or more) of the players has finally obtained his finalist status and when he has to defeat all of his opponents :1010

Owing that, many people have found that this mode can be a little bit """""annoying""""" since most of the tension and suspense only lasts for a moment at the end...

That's where my idea comes in :p

Here is the idea:
"We could include finalists steps."

As stupid as it might sounds it may be worth a try :pil

It could be quarter steps, third steps or half steps.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------EXAMPLE------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

To start gentle, let's take a look at a little example with third-finalist enabled ^^

Let's consider a match with 4 players (differentiated by colours) (Player 1-Player 2-Player 3-Player 4), and point limit is 120 :!:

Third-finalists is then set at 40 and 80 points.

First-round everyone finished, point are as such: (10-6-4-3)

ok

Several rounds latter (round 5) Player 1 reached 40 points... At this precise moment, score is like this: (40-32-24-19)

Well Player 1 is third-finalist! He has to get first as soon as possible if he wants to get more poinst! :pil

.....

Unluckily he got denied.. twice !! And even got overtaken!!

Points are now like this: (50-40-34-26)

Player 2 has finished first twice in a row, and with that he took the lead!! He reached 40 point the first time (enabled his third-finalist status), then finished first again, validating his third-fanalist status and getting 10 point :3
Eventually, Player 1 got first the next round, he is still in chase for victory :pop:

Moving on, we are now on round 12, Player 1 and Player 2got 80 point and Player 3....well he played out of his mind in this second half of the match!! :D

Scores are currently like this: (95-80-80-56)

Player 4 gots first place in round 10 while having is third-finalist status activated, will he catch up? :/

...

Finally, Player 3 crushed all of his opponents, he reached his last third-finalist status and ended it on a very nice local record (.1 behind WR) :3

After a lot of denied by Player 4, Player 1 and Player 2 eventually valided their 2nd third fanalist status and final score is : (123-122-121-80)

---------------------------------------------------------------------------IN A NUTSHELL-----------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ok let's sum up a little bit:
  • The idea is to include finalists steps.
  • In order to pass a step you have to get first (just like you would do with basic finalist status).
  • But this time around it allows you to unluck your points in order to get closer to victory.

With this type of system, fights between players would be of a greater importance. :pil

If this makes the match last longer we can lower the points limit. So that it does not become an endurance cup (we are not talking about KO, or Nascar here :roflol: )

What do you think? Is that a viable solution?
Please, react or even suggest others solutions to increase the hype during the competitions. :pop:

If any pro player read this and want to say something about his feeling about cup mode it would be great ^^

Bye-bye, take care :thx:

There is just too much colors in your post, not making reading very easy.
You should reconsider your post and make it more simple and clear.

Yes, you were right, I tried not to associate too much colors together this time :?

Cons of your system :
- make it more difficult to explain for "large public" cups
- make the cup even longer (well you would say you just have to lower the points to win at the end, but still an issue)
- you increase the ""randomn""/drama factor (ofc, it's your goal) at each of your steps, that's too hard on players' side

Your system is viewer oriented, not really player oriented (the actual cup mode has a good balance).
