If you've been sitting back and watching for as long as you guys have and been learning from the greats...and then were able to churn out a game like TM on the first go-round, then I would say you will have a shoo-in on your hands with SM. No doubts.

Hi, I know this might be a big question that might not be possible to answer, but what I've always wondered is that if you were to do an FPS game along the general concepts of TM (easy map editor, well defined core gameplay), wouldn't map builders need some sort of freedom in using the blocks in order to create fun maps gameplay-wise?
That would mean the builder would be allowed place of blocks at a fairly detailed point (maybe a more detailed grid?), and maybe even stretching/rotating (they'd have to snap) to other blocks?
I think it would seem too limited and basic to restrict blocks to a grid as you would end up with a lot of bland and generic maps (or maybe not? ;) )

I understand there will be some sort of importation of custom blocks to perhaps make up for this, but it would be nice to be able to 'fine tune' the blocks in-game for gameplay.

If you see the relatively limited number of blocks in tm and the endlessly different tracks that are made with them, i suppose that won't be the case.
Although there are many "more of the same" tracks too, the ones being popular on servers are differing a lot, and that for years and years allready.

Don't underestimate the creativeness of the community.

I still understand there will be the same level of creativity within custom maps - I'm not underestimating the community's potential at all. :)

I'm just trying to emphasize how with the grid, a lot of maps' block positioning will be noticably similar, even though the actual layout of the maps may be dramatically different.

What I'm trying to say is that several maps might have the same spacing between buildings, since we would be restricted to the grid in that way. I'm not sure if this problem will actually matter, it just depends on the game's gameplay style.

For example, if the gameplay is more Quake-style it probably won't matter as it's more about the map's pathways and focusing on how you'll move around the map, whereas if it were based around something slower-paced and more focused like COD/Battlefield/etc, the level's design would have to be a lot more fine to cater for the more tactical style of play.

I see what you're getting at. I bet they'll shrink the grid...because we're not dealing with cars (maybe). And if this is going to be some type of vehicular combat mania type game, well then, the spacing may not be an issue...

In TM there are lots of asymmetric blocks, if that will be in the new editor too (maybe even more) combining them will give lots of possibilities too.

i think they'll do it like a 1024*1024 grid and a building is 32*32 or something so can place it very near to eachother or veeeeery wide
