Can maniascript do anything in-game?

Post by Serpwidgets »

14 years ago I used Quake-c to make new weapons, a laser pointer, a grappler, etc. 10 years ago in UnrealScript I made weapons, player mods, and new gameplay like a hot-potato mode (one player at a time was "it" and attracted all non-instant projectiles) and for one level a "ghost" which would chase after players and make them drop all their pickups.

I'm wondering if there is or ever will be any ability to do something useful with maniascript. I looked at the documentation and it looks like everything is disabled. Mods I can think of, at the moment, would be:
- boat mode (for racing portions of a track across water)
- glider mode (for racing portions of a track in the air)
- hot potato or tag for multiplayer gameplay (this was awesome on a LAN in powerslide and motocross madness!)
- a grappler for insane cornering (or jumping if it's launched vertically)
- an "axis racing" mode where all turns are instantaneous and exactly 90 degrees (think light cycles, or an obscure series from the 80's called Automan)
- a rearview mirror
- a map of the track showing the player's position (and opponents)

Will we ever be able to make something like these?

Unfortunately, I've heard that the Maniascripting is extremely limited to things such as graphical objects on the screen, and track editor tricks (Such as the random track generator that just game out recently). You can't even read (or write) the positions of cameras or the car etc.

I'm honestly pretty disappointed by all this so I haven't even bothered to learn the language itself. If some new features get added though, I think I'll probably give it a try, but as of right now, there really isn't anything to do with it...
