High FPS rate?

Post by PitchBlack »

I need suggestions or tips on how to improve FPS, I have a decent gaming rig, I will post it if it's really necessary, but I'm curious as to how people get their FPS so smoothly on these videos. Example: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4IkU55GmTnY

That frame rate looks beautiful, the software I have available to make this happen is Fraps and Vegas 11 (as well as the game, obviously)

To OP: Just as an FYI, no rig (save for maybe a supercomputer) can render that at 60fps in gameplay. That's a rendered video using the in-game video tool. In gameplay, there are things automatically taken out by the engine to increase your framerate, but again, unless you have a super-rig, you're not going to be able to run it even at max game quality. Just turn it down--this game is more about gameplay than graphics anyway.

Hey, I can help you quite a lot with getting amazing FPS rate for videos :) Now I'm hoping I haven't made any mistakes, and it is all clear for you to read, but if you follow theis process, you can have any FPS you want, as long as you have the patience!

Want to know how ?

First of all, you need to save your clip as a reply!
Then go to Editors -> Edit a Reply -> Choose your reply -> Launch -> Edit
As soon as it loads up, you'll see the icon in the top left, with "AVI" on it. This is called "Shoot Video"... Click it!

Now, here you can select how much FPS you want, and the settings for your video.
I'd recommend having Anti-alias on 4x ... any higher will take forever! Also I'd recommend 1280x720 for 720p quality!
The Duration(s) is how much of the replay you want to record, in seconds - so if your replay is 1 minute and 20 seconds, then you want to have 80 typed into the duration!
Now, when you're ready, hit "OK" and leave your game to do the work :) I'd recommend uncompressed for full quality, but that's up to you... just remember it can take a long time!
In your Documents -> ManiaPlanet, your video file(s) will be created. If you are using uncompressed, then you will have an infinite amount of files appear, as each file is limited to 1gb.

If you aren't bothered about getting AVI uncompressed quality, you can stop here, since you shouldn't have millions of video files created.

You won't be needing TrackMania anymore, so just close it down :P
Now for the next stage, which is compiling those video files, (if needed)! A great piece of freeware is on the internet called VirtualDub - http://virtualdub.sourceforge.net/ ...
When you've downloaded the Zip file, extract it and go inside and launch the "Veedub64" or "Veedub32" depending on if you have a 64 bit or 32 bit system, and the VirtualDub interface will appear.

First off, drag the first video file that has been created into the VirtualDub interface (this should be called Video01, or similar)
Press "File" in the top left, and then "Append AVI Segement..."
Go to the location of your TrackMania2 video files (Documents -> ManiaPlanet) and then simply click the second video file (it should be titled Video01_001, or similar), and press Open.

Now the files will be combined in VirtualDub! The next step is to choose where the video starts and stop:

On the bar at the bottom, drag to the frame that you wish to start at, and press the "Home" key on your keyboard.
Do the same thing for where you wish to end the clip, but this time press "End"
The area of the video should be highlighted now.
Now, press "File" once again, and then "Save as AVI..." once you've done all this mumbo-jumbo, VirtualDub will start to process your new file, and you will have created your master piece!

Now get cracking on with the editing, and you could end up with a video with a similar smoothness to this: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cUP42nZT8Rk , which was a 300fps video, meaning it could be editing nice and smoothly :) Enjoy!

Nice tutorial #runwithagun#

But, What is the advantage to render uncompress and therefore compress with VirtualDub? It´s faster this way than directly compress with the trackmania video tool? Are not they using the same codecs?
