The danger of SOPA on the TrackMania community

Post by MatheusKS »

Friends, I'm not interested to discuss whether I am for or against this bill (I am against).
I noticed that this bill could destroy the community ManiaPlanet (and older TrackMania). A good example is the TrackMania Carpark and ManiaPark. Hundreds of cars posted here are created by the community, but the car manufacturers are holders of rights on such cars.
And now imagine the SOPA being approved. Many car manufacturers would point the Carpark and Maniapark as distributors of so-called "piracy." The result: sites off the air, causing damage to the community.
And not only ManiaPark and Carpark that will be affected. Many other sites and even ManiaPlanet itself may suffer from the law. The most affected are the U.S. players. But the world may suffer because of the law. I am Brazilian. TrackMania can not be influenced from SOPA here, but will lose a large part of the community (the U.S.). I do not know the position of Nadeo or Ubisoft on the matter. The revolt against the law here in Brazil is enormous.
I'm not here to express my opinion. I am against piracy, but I think that censoring the Internet is something hostile. I published it because I noticed that the community would be affected and would like to know more about it.

Thank you for understanding.

The bill anti-piracy S.O.P.A. was filed. PIPA was postponed, but it is not longer a problem.
The problem now is the ACTA, a kind of international treaty that has the same goals as the SOPA.
You already know this project. That might even be a noble cause (to avoid counterfeit drugs), but the consequences are much worse. Suppose that the treaty was approved and signed various countries:
I have installed ManiaPlanet on my laptop. I live in Brazil and need to solve a problem in Argentina. To pass through customs, I will have to show the invoices of products that is taking. ManiaPlanet has no invoices(if purchased by PayPal), and I will be stopped by this, and even be fined (or worse, arrested).
And now is the case Carpark and Maniapark. The cars here published may have the rights required by car manufacturers. These sites will be closed, and its administrators can be fined or going to jail.
Not to mention the other problems that treaty.
The problem of SOPA before, was that it could affect the TrackMania community in the United States. Now, with the ACTA, the whole community will be affected and may even be destroyed.
This situation is generating international discomfort. Can serve as a trigger for war.

And guys, think about the servers that use music too, but I don't think SOPA could shut down videogames servers like that. ;)
