Every pro quake player plays with "r_drawviewmodel 0" which means your weapon model is not displayed.
No weapon models is what the arena fps community wants, so nadeo is giving it to them. The same way every arena fps player uses forcemodel to make their opponents into bright green robots, so nadeo is making the player models all look the same and be highly visible. The same way every quake player lowers the graphics settings and disables shadows so they can see the terrain and their opponents easier, they've made it so the lighting is extremely soft so that it won't affect your ability to see other players in a fast game.
They are getting so much stuff right that every other attempt at a game like this (eg nexuiz) has gotten so horribly, horribly wrong, I have a lot of faith in this game from what they've shown us already.
As a former UT player i can say this post is 100% correct.
Force models to bright green fat skins, hide weapon, low textures, pewpew
Hey, but guess what? Not all of us shooter fans come from the UT and Quake crowd. That's like saying "ONLY COD IS A VALID SHOOTER LESS QQ!" Holy shit. Narrow-minded, much? I play -both- BF2 and COD, as well as Halo, and the ARMA series of shooters. In -all- of those shooters, at least a freakin' gun model is displayed, even if the rest of the player's body isn't. It gives a FRAME OF REFERENCE to the gamer, even if it is subconscious. Shit, even in console games, like Metroid and Starfox, they do this. It's not hard, people.
