Yes! This feature still works in TrackMania 2, it even displays the "Free wheeling!" text. Other TrackMania 1 driving behaviours like Ice, Snow, Wood and Grass also still exist. The next update of mpbc will let you use all of these.

Maniaplanet textures references and LOD are the two things that still lacks but i think we'll have some nice and usable blocks very soon :pil

first of all - awesome work arc_ ;) (i really want to know what nadeo thinks about you :D)
btw. whats your ingame name? are you a good driver or mapper? i want to play tracks made by arc_ ;D (BooleanDrift by Arc_)
i have a few questions to you and the community
  • 1. is someone working on a full set of blocks from Trackmania United (especially stadium)?
    2. is it possible to import the water groundblock from stadium? with these blue borders, the deep water and a working water surface
    3. custom sounds for custom blocks? water splash, turbo, engine turned off and so on
    4. animated blocks in canyon (in rally in tmuf you can watch windmills working)?
    5. can you bring *.bik file support back to trackmania? (on signs and maybe block-textures too)
    6. can you use the glass material like at the CanyonCar on a custom block? maybe breakable too
    7. is there a maximum of vertices in a custom block? would be cool to have a standard block and a HighDefinition Block for rendering (would be awesome to see every little stone on the street or having real trees)
    8. can you make custom blocks for me working again? ;) (canyon is installed on my sekundary HDD. i think i simply have to reinstall it on my primary)

My ManiaPlanet account is also "arc_", but really I don't play the game at all (even though I did buy it). TrackMania is a game that demands absolute perfection, and driving the same track 60x to get a reasonable time is just frustrating to me :D. I also don't create any maps, so if you see any "by Arc_" maps on MX, that's someone else. I just reverse the game and make tools.

Most things you're asking for, like water, glass, sounds and animations, are pretty advanced, and will be for a (much) later version of mpbc, if ever. Right now it's is still missing very basic features, things like LOD's were only implemented days ago and are still being tested.

I do think NadeoImporter imposes a vertex limit (it's originally a car converter after all). This can probably be removed, but you may want to think again about introducing extremely complex blocks. After all, the spirit of ManiaPlanet is that everyone should be able to run it at good speeds, not just people with supercomputers. As for "small details in rocks", that's what normal maps are for :)
