Now I just play with
X: Accelerate
R1: Brake

Not really, then you can experience the changes in settings immediately. And you can also change them in solo mode, Esc -> Input Settings.

I also ran into the "where is the deadzone config" thing. I already knew that 30% deadzone works best on my controller (.15 in TM2) but I couldn't find where to enter it until I asked somewhere else.
