Explanation of "LP"?

What is LP? I see you earn, or acquire it after a round (at increased amount if you do well.) But is it a universal, enduring even beyond the game/match? Does it do anything beyond giving an idea of your progress in a match?

LP= LadderPoints to show your ranking against other players in your country and in the world.
DIfferent titles can have different rankings (e.g. joust and elite contain an own ranking, while battle, battlewaves, melee are in the Shootmania ranking).
