No Spider/DanceMania, RollerMania!

Post by russianx »

Hey.
By being kinda dissapointed in what ShootMania got released to be, after seeing a video, I got this amazing idea for a new title. This thread is directed to the Nadeo team.

The answer is RollerMania. A tactical racing/arcade, but not over the top, I really like how Nadeo makes it's own arcade style, not too futuristic. So it should follow in this simple recipe.

Before starting, I want you to have an open mind, and try to combine all the details into one image, and maybe come up with new logical ideas while processing mine. The "Rollerman" is not a new idea, it's actually a sport. A suit with multiple wheels on it, going fast down mountain roads, facing forward.

As I mentioned, it doesn't need to be a complex idea, for it to be a good enough game. What is important thou, is to balance it just right (leave it to Nadeo).
What follows is just a collection of small ideas, that I think could work well in this type of game. It's still just on the surface of what's actually doable to make a great game (there are many ways to success here).

I'll just start with the ideas behind the whole game. There should be custom maps, collisions, many different modes (race, TA, stunt, cat'n'mouse, team) a lot of choice here. I want it to integrate into the "Mania" community, which has proven to be a great platform, with even more potential. So you get the picture here, now let's see how the game mechanics and the style will be like.

I haven't really thought it all out, as I got the idea just yesterday, I want Nadeo go more into detail (obviously).
Enough of the boring stuff, I'll dive right in.

You are a Rollerman, with a power-suit, a defence unit on your back, and a sort of power-burst attack unit near your front. These 2 tactical features is all you got, with help of your suit.
Let's say, it's a team race, 3v3. Each player has 1-5 resources (depends on the length of the map, and intensity of the gameplay you want). In this particular example I'll use 3. So, before you start the race, you must distribute these 3 resources to your 2 units, defence and attack. Simple enough.

Attack - a power burst that will slow down a player with no defence, if hit on target.
Defence - a repulsive electric grind that will prevent the slowdown, but instead increase speed, and a reduced control over your Rollerman, in a short instance of time.

Basically, if you have a defence unit activated instead of an attack unit, you will statistically have a more safer race.
The benefit with the attack unit is that you can use it when you yourself decide, an element of surprise, at a tactical moment, not foreseen by your opponent infront of you. I hope this wasn't too hard to understand.

What about the race and collisions. That's really the hard part to decide on. I won't give you the whole detailed vision of it, as I simply don't know what will work or not. It's something a developer has to create and test out.

I think the same about the design of the environment and the Rollerman suit. it's something you have to experiment with, to decide.

Here are some pictures to get an idea:

Wouldn't it be simpler to let someone create a corresponding car model for TM and drive there instead? :roflol:

Ok, you're now ready to watch this next clip.

I asked myself before making this thread, "Do I want to play a game like that?". A simple, but important question. The answer was yes.
Regarding the potential e-sport aspect of this game-idea, I believe it will appeal to a wide group of players, if done correctly.
Speaking of gaming in general, there is clearly a negative trend among developers and habits among gamers. The low-intellectual challenge of games today setting root in young gamers, creating an addictive need for endless excitement, rather than enjoyment of a tactical challenge.

I know, this guy is awesome and crazy. Only on street, a different car model and front camera perspective should indeed be enough.
Regarding coasting slides, it might be different.

The next step then is the (rocket) wingman flying down the Alp mountains http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ik57SnYA6K8 ;)

Thats why TM2 needs an engine kill block, so you just slide down from gravity.
