Editor Help Tips and Tricks

Post by Demented »

I started this topic so that people can share Tips & Tricks they have discovered or Ask & Answer Questions using the Track Editor.

I found a way to make a multilap race with a remote start location:
Start with a multilap Start/Finish block,
then a bit of track and a Finish block,
then some more track and checkpoints,
then back to the Finish block.
Each time you pass the Finish block it will count a lap and you don't have to go back through the "Multilap" block again.
Just be sure not to place any checkpoints between the Start/Finish/Multilap block and the Finish block.

A Simple Example:

Does this really validate? Rather sounds like a bug to me...

Yep. I've used this method a few times when I want a remote start location. I kind of wish there was a Start block made just for doing that though. Maybe even a random start location. IE: You place two, three or more starts and the game chooses one randomly at race start.
So, does anyone have any other building tricks or tips?

Some Help With Valley Block Placements
Creating an Arch,
From Topic ~ Trackmania 2 Valley blocks overview:

[quote="Image
I've seen this arch in maps but haven't had any luck creating one myself. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? What steps are needed to produce an arch?[/quote]
TMarc wrote:you need to place the mountain 4 type block exactly as shown in the miniature image:

Then fill the intersection with block 6-3-7:

No you can click 1 to 3 times to alter its apparence, as there are three variantions built-in:

Voilà :3

Placing Raised Forest Roads in Valley:

From Topic Valley: Blocks 5-3-x and 5-4-x
sayotoshi wrote:Hi,

Maybe this is stupid problem, but I wryly don't know how to place those blocks on map. When I take any of those blocks and trying to place on map, they are lighted in red, even if I trying to place it on empty map. How to use them???
These are the blocks in question: Image Image
TMarc wrote:You need to use the terraforming block 6 (this is some kind of forest or swamp, it has "OVERLAY" on it) before on a larger area.

Here it is:

Map attached (only to open in editor as it is not validated - without start and finish):

Hint: Use CTRL key and left mouse button click to "pick" the current block under the cursor. Then you know which block it is ;)

More - Placing Raised Forest Roads in Valley:

From Topic Valley: Blocks 5-3-x and 5-4-x
Soprah wrote:If you create a new block ( e.g. 5-4-3 )

that reaches a new level, you can't create any block which can be build on the new level. You even can't create a normal, simple road ( 5-3-1)
Image
on the new level. You are forced to take a block that goes down, to the lower normal level.

Is that intended?
TMarc wrote:Sure you can do that  You can use mountain type 1 (small soft hill) to climb as high as the game permits ;)

Place a hill, then place overlay forest on top of it, then combine both forest regions to make a contiguous band of forest, as shown here:

Image  Image  Image  Image

Then you can place the blocks on the slopes, e.g. 5-4-1, or block space before the slope you can place 5-5-3. 5-4-4, and fill the gap with 5-4-1 (it changes its aspect then).

Hint: the "underground view" helps to see the different levels better:

And here a view back from the last checkpoint, after a slope with 5-4-1:

Track updated (and validated, so you can just drive it) :pil
Thanks again to TMarc for the detailed explanations on placing these blocks.

Question about Custom Objects:
Can they be snapped to a grid?

you mean the small objects included with Valley? no, they can be positionend nearly randomly only.
Grid snapping for objects depends on some settings or it will only be available later I think.
