On-screen text - Just need a nudge in the right direction

I've been reading around a bit trying to figure out how I can get triggered on-screen messages for my tracks, like a message saying "slow down" for instance. I'm finding that I'm getting sort of lost in this.. What realm of editing this falls into, for starters.. Is this maniascript? manialinks? editor plugin?

I'm really just trying to do some basic on-screen messages. Can any of the vets here point me in the right direction? Most of the info I've found so far starts throwing syntax at me (which I will have no problem learning) right off the bat with little confirmation of what I'm actually accomplishing until like step 20 of X tutorial haha. Hate to come in here with so much flying straight over my head but I'll be honest, I started getting lost.

ok, so that's not just for replays? I took a look at it and almost thought I was on to something but something kept telling me that was a replay only thing
