I have an idea for a new game mode for ShootMania, but I have a few questions. (Hopefully, this is the right place to put this.)
First, a description of the mode:
- As the name suggests, it's a race. The first player to hit all the checkpoints and get back to the first one again (not the spawn) gets the most points.
- Unlike Obstacle or Time Trial, you still have weapons. Each time you reach a checkpoint, you get an extra shot.
- Shooting other players only slows them down.
- Hits, first to a checkpoint and top times all give points. When everyone finishes, or when a timer runs out, the round ends. The map ends when someone reaches a certain number of points.
- The next checkpoint should light up, but each player should see their next checkpoint, not the overall next.
So, I have no idea how to do some of that. Especially the third point there. Can you set a player's speed to 0 when hit or something like that?
Also, I wanted to ask if this mode sounds like something worth developing? Any details that should be changed to make things simpler or more fun? (The goals are in a loop so that it can handle multiple laps, but I'm not sure if it's worth worrying about.) I've made a test map if anyone's interested in that.

Hey magimaster
thanks for sharing your idea!
i will try to respond to some of the main points of the suggested game mode

an alternative solution may be that the stamina doesn't reload for a few seconds if you get hit... stamina is more or less the only movement related thing maniascript is able to influence
and the second thing: do players get eliminated or do they just suffer because of hits? i guess they should only suffer, as you probably can't finish a single round if there are many players otherwise
overall:
i think such a mode might be a fun thing, but the big problem is the punishment for being hit... how about stamina degradation AND extra time like 2 seconds each time you get hit? so that some one who gets hit very often can't win as his time has been increased too much
additionally i fear that the players spread themselves pretty fast over the whole map and there isn't much of shooting action as you run pretty much alone most of the time (i might be wrong about this though)

is there a deeper reason for having to get back to the first checkpoint? ^^magimaster wrote:- As the name suggests, it's a race. The first player to hit all the checkpoints and get back to the first one again (not the spawn) gets the most points.
unfortunately maniascript can't influence the players movement at all..magimaster wrote:- Unlike Obstacle or Time Trial, you still have weapons. Each time you reach a checkpoint, you get an extra shot.

the first thing that came into my mind was that the hits shouldn't be worth so much, so that players don't just shoot people instead of going for a good timemagimaster wrote:- Hits, first to a checkpoint and top times all give points. Have you every played to GoalHunt?
There are some similarities between the 2 gamemodes.

Thanks for the replies.
Steeffeen: The biggest reason to get back to the first goal is to allow a multilap race, probably as a server setting. It probably wouldn't be much more difficult to allow either the first or last goal to be the ending point (again as a setting).
Also, yeah, if players got eliminated, the race would be too hard to finish. Just increasing the finish time might work, but would be more likely to spread the players out as the leader wouldn't actually slow down. It'd certainly be something to test, but I figured that if getting hit slowed you down enough, the second place could drag the leader down some.
Akbalder: I hadn't heard of that one. (Almost all the servers I see running are Elite or Royal.) I'll have to keep an eye out for that one.

Be sure to set your filter to custom gamemodes to find it, even then it's pretty rare.
There's also a gamemode being tested called Athletics which is basically a collection of olympic disciplines ported to ShootMania. One of them is called Speed sliding and it's quite familiar to racing.
Wooden Planks are used as tracks and the sliding definitely gives you more of a "car vibe" than walking on the ground, might be worth checking out.
