Steam - Restarting when switching environments?

Post by gimpymoo »

Am I missing something?

Surely they should be merged into a single launcher so I can create my own playlist using Canyon and Stadium tracks?

Having to "restart" is stupid.

I have not tried, but does this also mean you cannot join servers with multiple environments?

This will become more of a problem when more ebvironments are available.

How is it a Steam problem? I think you just made that up.

Been using Steam without problem for MANY years.

They only distribute the code given to them by Nadeo/Ubisoft.

The code is obviously not working.

I meant, it's the problem of the steam version of maniaplanet.

as far as I know, restarting is the only way to let steam "know" that you play another game now.

you can't think of TM² Canyon and TM² Stadium as two environments of one game anymore. Those two are separate games now in the ManiaPlanet universe. And yes, that means you can't have more than one environment on the same server anymore.
This in particular is not a problem of Steam.
Having to restart the game to switch the title on the other way is a problem of Steam in the ways the game is distributed at the moment. If you activate let's say TM² Canyon key only, Steam downloads ManiaPlanet and the Packs that are needed to play TM² Canyon in on folder (MP_TMCanyon)
Every title (TMCanyon, TMStadium, SMStorm) get's downloaded in a separate folder, therefore switching games is required, because Steam has to start another executable.
It's a bit stupid but probably the only way to do it right now, since every game always gets their own app-folder in Steam

Good reply, thanks.

So mixed servers are not an option at this time, that I never knew and a shame to although surely not permanent?

The data folder location problem can be changed though and is not a "problem" which cannot be resolved. The Nadeo direct download version works OK, so I assume the installer catalogs the install location and reports back to a file which the launcher then reads back when running.

I am not a developer but surely that process needs to change to catalog the Steam install folders which can be done as I know other games which have utilised the same process.

Or, surely they can develop a launcher which takes care of this by unifying the install locations. it all just seems very untidy, even with the Nadeo download if a seperate .exe is required to launch each environment, the engine is the same right so what is the need?
