It looks like you're playing with a VMware ? (you could have mention that before...)
The crash occurs when uploading a texture using BC4 format.
I'm sure the game check for support of this format before using it.
It looks like you're VMware is saying BC4 is supported though it's not...
We may add a compatibility option to disable such extended format (even if they're reported as supported).

Yep, mode 4 and 5 doesn't work for me, would be great if you can implement such a thing (Even better would be a linux version)
It should solve your issue, and also helps us to reduce (cpu) memory usage on 32b systems.
