MM: Map voting bug

Post by Soprah »

Hey,

When players vote for the map which they would like to play, the matchmaking mostly doesn't chose the map with the most votes. For example: There were 3 votes on Numb and one on Breach. The matchmaking system chosed Breach :?

It's not a bug, it's a feature.

Example: there are two maps, map A with one vote and map B with five votes. Then map A has a probability of 20% to be selected and map B 80%. It's done this way to prevent the same maps to be played too often in matchmaking. If at least one player wants to play a map, then there's a slight chance to play it.

Isn't it supposed to be 16.66% and 83.33% in your example?

So what if the majority of the players vote a map that's not played often in matchmaking, but one player picks the most popular map, then the system decides to choose that map? This completely breaks the system and leaves players pissed off at the game because it appears to be obviously broken.

If most players choose to vote a map, just goto that map. Adding this 'feature' is only making the matchmaking look more broken especially when you don't even notify the players why the game chose a map. Sorry but to put this bluntly, I think this is absolutely pointless.

I think this is 'good in theory, but not so good in practice'.

Ofc it wont happen a lot, but if the map with the fewest votes gets chosen then all other players will be "frustrated".
Also the usual voting in ShootMania ( mapvote, votekick, voterestart ) are not like this. So it can also be very confusing.

I personally think that the lack of information/explanation is what mainly teases the players. You both said that it appears as if it's a bug / makes the people confusing / looks more broken. I guess as long as the player is informed about this feature, the (most) players will understand and accept it (like I experienced by myself when I explained somebody else this ''strange behaviour'' of the matchmaking system) because it's very useful: It prevents from playing always the same maps and this is pretty annoying for a lot players.

Generally, lack of information (or rather: the access to the information because the information is actually there but nobody knows where to find it) is a big issue in Maniaplanet. In this case, I would suggest to simply add a text below the vote-box to explain the feature as well as clarifying that it is no bug.

I agree. The way I see it you have 2 options:

1.
Visual explanation during the voting. So people will understand what is happening & why.
--> Problem solved: People dont think its a bug anymore

2.
Make it similar to all other votes.
--> Its the simplest solution & it works. Nobody ever complained. The map with the most votes wins ^^

I added a text to explain how the vote works. The changes are available on GitHub for people who want to try it on their servers.
