@nadeo: Server ping info and Latency tools!

Post by weerwolf »

Gooooooodmorning.

I have read several topics around in all terms as ping, latency, snap, netvision, netcode, opinions, facts and wishes.
In the last few weeks and after reading all i conclude the most obvious: it cannot be perfect.
Some things though should be addressed.

First of all is the ping shown when u click a server. Tell me if i am wrong, but that value is the ping the nadeo masterserver does to the gameserver. It does not show the actual players ping to the gameserver. Which makes players believe they have a low ping?

Since lag is a combination of factors not only ping, but also jitter even low ping players may have devastating effect on gameplay. There have to come a tool for admins where they can monitor a players ping/jitter.
It can then become a servers hosts choice to allow/disallow players based on the quality of service they provide.
I read that some checks can be made (expansion netstats), FB posted a screen of trackmania with it. But in shootmania this does not work. Needs dedicated fix?

For now i solved part of this problem by running 2 identical Elite servers naming them gold network and and silver network servers, where i keep watch as much as possible for lagging players on the gold - kicking them in notification that they can use my silver server without restrictions. But of course this is time consuming and needs some other form of tool.

When I click on a server and see the info-server-window I always see a too high ping.

For example :
I click on my own server ( where I --always-- have 20/30 ping ) and it shows 90.
Always values between 80-100.

Effect on public servers :
"Oh this server has a too high ping, I"m going to play somewhere else."

---------

Then there is also the snap. The effect 1 player can have on the total game experience is just too drastic.
In Joust ( 2 player mode ) if 1 player laggs, the other player will feel it hard.
In Elite ( 6 player mode ) if 1 player laggs, the others will feel it less but still quick & hard.

In more crowded modes like Royal it feels more & more laggy when more & more players join. Even if they all have a good connection. The minute 2 or 3 players with a bad ping join the entire gaming-experience becomes poor.

Pro players dont like playing with snap higher than 75 because it changes the game. Obviously every casual gamer will say that I am overexaggerating, but it's true.

TLDR :
- Show correct ping information in info-server-window
- Reduce the impact a player can have on the general connection/snap. ( you know what I mean )

Stop always blaming the game for being so bad. You just cant control (for one example) the fact that the most gamers share their internet with everyone living in the same house, where nowadays computers, tablets, tvs, mobiles, hell sometimes even **** equipment is using the network. Pro-gamer or Casual gamer, they all feel that huge jitter when there is someone like that on.

Now i would like to return to the topic at hand for the request for which i posted this, fixes and tools ( i will rephrase the subject)

With regards,

Sorry on my behave too - but i read also a lot of replys of u on the latency thing and yes by that reason i changed also the topic a bit. becuase i ment not in anyway adress 'problems' on software (only the server screen that shows ping from nadeomasterserver to the gameserver).

Im just dieing for the lack of infos about players connecting/playing to better manage the servers

Why "max snapshot" is (was?) never true ?

Why this tool is not active on gold matchmaking ? It's not suppose to be competitive at this lvl ?

How the fuck the players with bad connections can play well this game and be competitive ?

So why should we all pay for that ?

Thats a topic of its own ;)

Combination of luck and getting used to late responses (eg. shoot more in front of path enemy); but you should ask some of them ;)

Since the beginning of Trackmania, later on ManiaPlanet these games have been gameserver community driven. And that will for the most part always be. In shootmania there is the Ubi exception, but all the others are hosted by enthousiast like me who pay xxx euros a month to run servers. So for that matter of speaking ur not the one whos paying ;)

And that also is the reason to split servers for players (mine anyway). With all do respect; i do not want to play with a brazilian (or any other real long distance players) in the server. 99/100 this player has 150-300 ping

So when you lag you deliberately shoot behind/front somebody? And you just need to get used to it? I'm sorry but you shouldn't do that and that doesn"t really sound enjoyable to me.

Anyways I tried to not reply anymore ( because it was off-topic ) , but you talked about it first :p

As you said, the issue is not only the late responses it's also the unstable connections.
Well, good luck to predict the unpredictable.
"Luck" is real in so many situations right now.

I meant why good connections are stuck with bad connections on Ubisoft MM. (Your topic is @nadeo and i only speak about the "official" MM of Ubi)

I know what you, Dreammyyyyyyyyy(yyyy..) and a lot of others players and dev do and i'm realy grateful about that.

I'm 100% agree with that but what I can't understand it's why Nadeo/Ubi have not thought about regions limitation and more restricted rules about ping and stability connections ?
I guess it should have be done at first a long time ago.
As you said the Ubisoft server is an exception on Mania Planet so why they don't lead ?

Elite MM is an open window of the game and if it's poorly managed player think that the game is just broke.. I'm just concerned by the fact that we are now less then 300 players per day.. I guess the Brazilian guy can't play this game in a good situation. And I guess we are only enough in EU.

who btw said this maxsnap isnt working? Btw putting it on 100 is kinda lame.
If I were admin I'd put it on 80.
