Some time ago I recorded two videos which shows what I just described.
The first video shows how close you need to shoot to the model next to it or above it in order to get a hit and how big the distance can be below the model to get a hit:
In the second video it shows how ridicolously big the distance below the model can be to still bump the player:
I think in general splash damage is a good thing in sm but it should be the same for all sides and this is not how it supposed to be.
