More versatile terrain forming options

Post by jankkos »

I have now played Trackmania 2 multiplayer beta for a couple of days and while I am enjoying it a lot, in some ways it feels more like a graphics update with new environment than a true sequel. One thing that I would really have liked is much more versatile terrain forming options. For example, I'd like to be able to construct hills with different steepnesses and then put road blocks directly on the hills.

Now the only way to do elevation changes in tracks is to put the elevation changing road blocks in air. I think that it would be visually much more pleasing if it was possible to construct different kind of hills and then place the elevation changing road blocks directly on the descents of the hills.

Umm, have you missed the button left to the "Block mode"? Because that opens terraforming mode.

I am sorry if my language isn't very clear, english is not my first languange.

It is of course possible I have missed something, but in my version, the "terraforming mode" is actually just two options - a big piece of terrain and a smaller piece of terrain. The smaller pieces can be stacked, but it is still not something that I would call versatile.

Furthermore, as far as I know, you can't place road blocks on the slopes, only on top of higher terrain. If I want to lover the elevation of the track, I have to put the blocks in air. If I have mistaken, please correct me!

Because of this limitation, recreating a Daytona USA "Advanced" style track perfectly is not possible. See the Youtube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=17fMX7Qxnas
For example the downhill part from 1:03 to 1:12 is only possible to do in Trackmania 2 if you put the track pieces in air, with no vegetation around them. Wouldn't it be way nicer visually if the track pieces were actually on slope of a mountain, like they are in Daytona USA?

Terraforming is arguably very rigid and options lacking. I really wished voxel-based terrain editing and I already thought so when I first saw trailer with a tunnel in it. They definitely won't be changing this system for full release, but for future versions I hope more flexibility and versatility.
