What makes a good server in your eyes?

Post by proma »

Every once in a while I join servers that are very well attended and ask myself what it is that makes this server so appealing to the others, because I don't like most of them.

So the bottom line is: What is a must have for a good server in your eyes?

When there are some answers I will add a poll where you can vote as a summary.

Well the answer to this is easy ppl usually visit where ppl go and think thats the best place to visit, but you must also see the suggested ones are always those that are full never empty, its a guide for ppl to visit.

In the end you must see where you want to go.

The maps are very important. I don't really like Short and Lol Maps, just "normal" ones 30-50 sec. Also, I rarely visit servers with less than 10, 20 players. There should be a certain amount of players. Unfortunately, the most visited servers are Short or Lolserver...

As I already pointed out a full server is no guarantee that you will like it/it is good.
Also I do not like the idea of saying: A full server is a good one. Of course an empty server is bad,
but a full server attracts by far more interest and has an advantage even if it is not as good as others.
Of course you don't want to play alone, so lets assume you have the choice between equally well visited
servers, what would lead you to favor one over the other?

Personally I think people make a good server. I can have a great time in a server even if the maps aren't the best (obviously, within reason :P ). Also, I think a good server (obviously, this will be seen as biost from myself) has a decent system like TPS, but some players like it, others don't.

For me the maps are most important. If a server got great maps having 2-3 decent skilled people racing with me already makes me happy but that is quite rare currently. I also like pretty much all Trial servers but I surely dont expect anyone driving there xD

The sad thing is that 90% of the players drive on FS/LOL/Shorty servers which I really dislike. The tech servers (with superb maps) out there are usually empty or with max 5 players. Most players only seem to care about how to get easy LP by driving very easy (and in most cases boring) maps with lots of people.

Yeah, I have never understood why race for LP, but hey, some do, some don't :P

Appart from the trail thing i agree

One other thing i personaly find very important is that the screen shouldn't be too bussy with blinking commercials or an overload of server plugins.

not reading the posts above me
In my opinion
  • Good tracks
  • A karma or rating system
  • Displaying WRs and times like author time, TMMX WR, Dedimania WR, local rec
  • A local rec database linked to a service like dedimania
  • Not too many plugins visible at once
  • a jukebox
  • enough players on it

I like servers to have a variety of different map types -- maybe some FS, some Tech, some others -- and even some that use multiple styles on different parts of the same map. I prefer smaller groups of 4 to 10 people (I don't like servers that are so full you can't carry on a coherent conversation with someone else when you're sitting out a round), and... I used to play just time attack but right now I'm enjoying Rounds and Laps mode better, especially when there's a variety of different map styles. I do time attack when all I want to do is chat :P.

I like to gain LP, but I prefer to gain it in a way where I deserve it, and while having fun in the process. It's satisfying to get LP, but at the same time I don't really care about how much I have.

The eyes of the plush lobster stared deep into my soul. I picked it up, and then I was a panther.
