Driving with two wheels on the dirt gives more speed?

Post by iamadv8 »

I don't know if this is the correct section (I don't think so), and in case tell me where to find this kind of discussions.

This is something I saw also in old Trackmania.
I see that, in certain tracks, top drivers (let's call them this way) go for a fraction of second with two wheels on the side of the road (where is dirt) and this gives them more speed

Am I right?
Is there a technical reason why it is so?
Where can I find this kind of "strategical" discussions/tips?

Is there a general "strategical guide" somewhere?
I mean the way one should drive?

By skirting the edge of the track in a turn, they are taking a quicker line. It's why Formula 1 drivers drive on the inside borders rather than staying completely on the tarmac.

The green line is the geometric racing line, the fastest line through that section. An early apex (dark blue) would force you to correct your line (and lose speed) while a late apex (light blue) doesn't cut as much track.

This article on Wikipedia should be a decent guide.

No no, that's not what I meant.

I mean that on a straight road the driver goes just for a second, slightly out of the road and then he comes back on the track (on the tarmac, you would say)

Look at what "Lucario" (world record) does on Track C10 just almost at the end of the first straight after the start (less than 10 seconds after the start).
He goes slightly on the right, touches the dirt, comes back on the tarmac, and then the car speeds up.

Is it because he touches the dirt?
Is it because there is a light jump and (I don't know why) the car on 2 wheels is faster that the car on 4 wheels?

Nope thats a nojump trick. He slightly turns before that bump so the car stays on the road instead of flying. When you stay on the road, you can keep and build up speed. It has nothing to do with 2 wheel driving or driving on dirt :)

Thank you, that makes sense

Look at C03 and at what LikeDriolu (or something like that, anyway #1 in the World) does at the race start, just before the jump.
Is it the same trick?

Is there any list of this tricks to improve our style of guide?

Thats me btw^^
It is nearly the same, I use that trick to get earlier on the ground so I can build up more speed ;)

Wow!
Nice to meet you then ;) it is a great pleasure for me.

I never met "world recordmen" before (I had always wished to meet good, old Kaboom... who was #1 on TMU).

How many other tricks there are?
Is there any site, Forum, discussion, that lists or discusses all those tricks?

*EDIT*
I am having a look at your youtube channel (linked in your signature) and it seems very interesting.

My only question (I'd have more but it is enough) is how can you drive so close to the walls without touching them
Do you use the keyboard?

*EDIT2*
On C03 do you brake just after the jump after the acceleration, more or less at 6''?
I am asking because I see the brake light that switch on for a moment
If so, why? Since TM2 doesn't have the "aerodinamic brake" that stabilized the jumps in TMNU?

I drive with a Joystick, but sometimes I drive with keyboard, just for fun :)
As far as I know there are no forums or anything like that where tricks are discussed. Mostly you have to learn those tricks by yourself.
On C03, I _do_ brake right before the ramp ends so the car's nose goes down what makes the car have ground contact a bit earlier, so the car can build up more speed. An important thing in TM is not to have much air time, so if there is a chance to stay on the ground, use it
