Petition for Multiplayer Editor

Post by occam »

Petition for a TM² Multiplayer Editor Title Pack! A similar request was already as a Suggestion in the English/Shootmania/Map Editor section...and as quotes below show the idea/suggestion is even older, so maybe lets now try a 'Petition':
Hopefully good arguments why this is important are listed below.
;)

The editor communicates with other editors (near infinite builders) through a TCP connection, ran via an external application. Maniaplanet communicates with this application through xml-rpc callbacks.

It is quite fast and works flawless block-based (in the latest version, the video is severely outdated).
I haven't got over serializing and deserializing terrain correctly yet, that bit's buggy.

TGYoshi wrote:Well, it was more a fun experiment and I never really thought people would use it because it still requires an external application and someone running a server for it.
Maybe soon(tm) I'll get onto it again.
Something like a Multiplayer-Title should at least have the support of Nadeo, otherwise it would be too much work to maintain (see _arc and TM2Unlimiter for example).

Having a Multiplayer Editor would be a chance to "keep the talent" in the community.

I was struggling if i should mention another game for my argument, because the point is valid without an example.
Minecraft has for a lack of a better word 'bad' graphics, terrible game mechanics...but there is a reason why there are nearly 10M copies sold (https://minecraft.net/stats), while a huge number will never use Multiplayer Editing it is big part of the "media buzz" about MC. Middle earth, Manhattan the huge projects "make the news" and keep the hype up. So despite the graphics and the game mechanics there are things to learn from Minecraft.
A community can build together.

but though it is very complex, it could be very fun. I'm for it : thumbsup :
So this indeed was already asked a few times for TrackMania! So the idea isn't new, on the contrary the idea is way overdue :->

Maybe something like this already is in development in Nadeo's X-Labs. If not it really should be :- D

We would like to work on it, but are working on other stuff at the moment. It means that we will probably do something for this one day, but we will do cooler stuff before. Haha, I am just provocating here : mrgreen : (but I am serious, it is to cool)
Please, set the Mulitplayer Editor on the list of the 'cool stuff' at some point in the future : )

It have been the talented people, the very active community members who asked for a Mulitplayer Editor. Resources and time for Nadeo of course are limited. And there are many wishes. And Nadeo is exceptional in keeping the community interested and happy. There are many "Social Media Features" in Maniaplanet, but a Multiplayer Editor would easily top all those features.

Article is from April 17th, 2008 ...but actually quotes an interview, that 'was performed in the lead up to Trackmania Sunrise'...

“It came from the toy – the fact that you can build tracks and have a car on it,” says Florent, “You can build short tracks or long tracks, free ride tracks… you play it like you want”.

Now make it: "You can build ...tracks together...” :thx:

This topic embodies my desire as a map-builder..
I am just loving to create cool and creative maps in Trackmania/Shootmania for a long time..
And this fantastic petition would fit perfectly to Maniaplanet!

Isn't it your propaganda that people are able to be creative and share stuff by Maniaplanet?
If that's true you should go ahead and develop this multiplayer editor!
I've never seen a multiplayer-editor in any game before.. and that would increase the amount of map-builders in Maniaplanet!!!

You've got my support!

So many people use VoIP these days. It's really not out of the question that a couple people could connect on Skype, connect on the multiplayer editor, and hammer out a track together... throwing ideas back and forth and showing the other person exactly what ideas they have for the layout and scenery. The possibilities are endless. And the ability for this to pull the community closer together are immeasurable. I think it could even be more useful for building ShootMania maps than for TM2 maps, since many ShootMania maps are quite non-linear.

A community built tool will be great, and I'm sure TGYoshi will make it as good as he can. But a tool that is integrated in the game has the potential to give us a much more seamless experience I think. Please think about adding this feature in the near future.

I would sign up this petition with just a small warning.

Nadeo has already lots of things to do (see the Canyon priorities thread), of which some are annoying bugs that should be fixed before to add new features. In other words: make the game clean first, then complete and expand it.

Especially those ones seem important, if not crucial, to me:

Fix the CP times, to be able to see the difference to the players in front of and behind you. This is very important to get a good racing feeling in leagues, just as in ETs Formula ET. This worked in the late stage of TMU, therefore it is quite hard to understand why it does not work for TM2.
driftor wrote:when i finish in rounds, i for example finish , it says im 6th, but im 5th when im 8th, it says 9th etc.
It actually doesn't show the players that crossed the finish before you crossed the last CP.

But indeed, this feature could really make the difference between Trackmania 2 and Trackmania 1.5.
