is it limited to any gamemodes or is there any known bug around this?

it's not exactly "limited" to a specific game mode, it's rather different depending on the game mode, because some modes have its own scoreboard and that's why the behaviors are distinct from each other

i think on the scoreboard which you're facing there are little player icons which you can click, right along a camera icon for spectating
the "other" scoreboard while pressing ALT is just a different tab, you can switch back to the normal scoreboard on the left hand side

But I think thats the problem: it doesn't work for me on the normal scoreboard but maybe when pressing ALT showing the alternative scoreboard and then switching to the tab that shows the same than the normal scoreboard (I am not sure about that) but is clickable.

But like I said: I will test it tonight.

Now I got it: it's not the lighted person icon below the name but the black person icon right to the name. I wouldn't have noticed it without the highlight sound. I think it's not very intuitive, but that seem to be a common problem with the maniaplanet interface.
