I registered with this forum just so I could share my input as to why the game is dead. I didn't even know it had been released. I played TMNF on Steam with a bunch of my friends a few years ago. We all enjoyed it. Canyon wasn't released on Steam for whatever reason and I've never even heard anyone talk about it. I read video game blogs, too, and keep up on this stuff. This game must have had no real marketing. I don't know why they wouldn't release it on Steam. Greedy, I guess.

No, you don't know because you didn't search Hylis' posts for it. ;) He discussed the reasons for this in detail, and also hinted at a possible Steam release later.

Agreed!
We want our custom blocks
Agreed! (But it will never happen.)
and real maniascript. What's there right now is nothing close to something useful or fun.
Agreed! All they did with maniascript was reinvent HTML to make their game into a browser.
And we want more environments.
I want user-made environments but since there won't be custom blocks, that won't happen.
If Nadeo doesn't pop up something quickly someone will come up and make a better Trackmania. And don't judge me if it will be me.
I'm already on it. If you want it done right, you gotta do it yourself. Although I wouldn't call it a better trackmania, I'd just call it a better racing game. All that time I would have spent trying to configure a server or make new tracks, is going into design and programming instead. I looked into several engines and did some work with irrlicht and ogre using C++ but found what I think will work best for me. First I'm updating/porting a game I published 10 years ago to get familiar with C# and XNA and the new stuff in DirectX since the last DirectX I used was 7. The cool part with using XNA is it should be relatively easy to port to Xbox too. :)

You have no clue what maniascript is. You're talking about manialinks, which already existed before TM2.

Start small, try game maker.

P.S.: You remind me of my 9 year old self. Thank god there were no XNA shit back then. I'd so get hooked and give up.
P.S2.: You also remind me of the last time I had a smiley after every sentence. :D

Having written an editor plugin, I know what maniascript is. Having looked through the entire list of methods/properties/contexts that are disabled, I also know what maniascript is not.

(BTW I used the plugin to help stick an arena block in the side of a cliff without it being a ground variant. It really sucks that I had to write a plugin, download an unlimiter to hack the exe, download a file unpacker, and use a hex editor on the track file, all just to accomplish something that should have been built into the editor in the first place.)

Don't blame Ubisoft.
  • It wasn't them who decided we needed another Island as a standalone game for €20.
  • It wasn't them who threw out everything that made Stadium popular - competitive, precise driving and many freeform blocks - in favour of Need for Speed Underground.
  • It wasn't them who implemented all those narrow blocks even though we told them since beta that we don't want them.
  • It wasn't them who almost went live without platform loops because the beta testers had to tell them we actually want loops in a TM game.
  • It wasn't them who realised the game wasn't compatible with the digital distribution platform everyone uses and rather than fixing it so the game can actually be sold to people who want to buy it, ditched Steam and cost themselves a large number of players.

Ps. Despite this, Questmania deserves more development attention than the other two titles together because this could well be a runaway success. Neverwinter Nights and the sequel were super popular and left a huge void for an RPG with a story editor. If Nadeo do exactly this, they'll hit paydirt.
- I dont think it is similar to island.. to slow, strange NFS handling and easier! Island was/is great and a challenge.. canyon isnt :P when u see the fullspeedmaps its a lot like stadium, also the drifting is from stadium...
-stadium was popular , cause it was free (a lot of players=competition... ) ! tms demo was more played as tms too.. cause it was free... when i go out of the tm world... minecraft is popular, cause it is free too! (more then 50% are playing online with a hacked version! ) LoL is free, thats why it is popular atm ! ;)
but i totally agree about the greatness of the stadiumblocks, they did a great job/variaton there :) and when u speak about precise driving.. that comes with skill, u can do it on every tmu envo too, as u can do it on canyon!
- the narrow blocks are the good blocks, cause they give a little bit challenge in a way to easy game ! ... -.-
- tm dont need loops... look rally or alpine, that were real trackmanias, both had no loops and i never heard anyone saying... if rally would have loops i would enjoy it !
- i totally dont understand why they not sold it on steam too...

and yes, questmania can be a huge success and i am waiting for it too :) (as i am waiting for the other 2 tm envos) :pop:

and about customblocks: u can paint your blocks, so they are custom :roflol:

anyway, if nadeo wants to make a revolution, pls copy the ModNation Racers editor! thats the future... not the blockstyle ;) it would fit perfect for a pc game , cause u can make nice tracks with a mouse instead of fingers (as in ModNation Racers :P ) that would bring u in front of consoleracinggames too (GT,NFS,Forza) , cause it would be no fun to draw maps with a pad! ;)

there are tons of free games out there, not everyone is popular. the reason why games like LoL and TMN are so popular are not because they are free, it's simply because they are great games. people don't continue playing games for years just because they are free. im honestly getting really tired of people (TMU players) bashing the game saying the only reason it reached success was because it was free, it's just such nonsense and show of ignorance. i can write alot about why i think stadium is such a deep and awesome environment, and im hardly the only one.
to end it of, you should know that alot of people that started with the free version then bought United. and still most of them mainly/only play stadium.

Nadeo has alot to thank TMN for i'd say. too bad they don't seem to realize it.
