Maniaplanet Linux Clone

Post by AdnxZeusking19 »

Hi everyone,

I am a software developer in my spare time and I was wondering whether if I get a team together that we create a clone/counterpart of Maniaplanet for Linux.

Of course, we would need to get permission from Nadeo for this, I have already sent an email to them but no reply.
Anyway, thanks to web services, some features of gaining information already exists and can be used.
It may also be possible to use a tool like Wireshark to find queries to the current servers and in effect back the game on the official infrastracture to create a unified environment.

It is a large project and I would only expect things to come slowly but also with a high standard.
If Nadeo approves I am happy to lead the project and see where things go for Linux.

Thoughts? Constructive please, and please none of the "do not bother" comments.

Thanks for the link, TMarc. I have checked it out and I am aware of wine support, however It may be more stable and more of a learning experience to completely rewrite the maniaplanet engine.

Still awaiting response from a member of NADEO. :)

Would be a great feature if a client for Linux systems are available. Maybe nadeo is working on something like your idea for the new SteamOS (which is based on Debian Wheezy) or as a title for the SteamMachine? Who knows, i would love it

Of course would be great if anyone of nadeo could say something about the plans if maniaplanet will be available for SteamOS as a native client and/or for other linux OS :)

I did think about the Steam Machine and Steam OS in general. The project will be available for use on SteamOS, but it will not be on the official store unless Nadeo add this client as official.

Good luck on your "adventure", you'll need it. Without any source code, porting ManiaPlanet to Linux, let alone the engine to OpenGL, will be almost impossible. I'm cheering for you guys though ;)

Funny you mention Unity3D, as that is what we will be using.
